On the 5th of November 2008 newsstands around the world sold-out their editions with front page news of the historic election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States.

Now you can relive that experience thanks to a one of a kind collection of newspaper front pages from around the world created by the non-profit Poynter Institute school for journalists.

This free iPhone app includes 20 historic front pages and commentary excerpted from the complete print edition, including an introduction by G.B. (Garry) Trudeau, the creator of Doonesbuy.

Headlines tell only part of the story. Download this free app now to see how twenty of the world’s newspapers told this story:

• “This is Your Victory” - Orlando Sentinel

• “Racial Barrier Falls in Decisive Victory” - The New York Times

• “The Dream Comes True” - The Daily Telegraph, London

• “Obama Makes History!” - Anchorage Daily News

2/5 stars

Higher resolution needed

It was a good idea putting the headlines of such an event into an app like this. I would love to see this done with other events like 9/11, the passing of Michael Jackson, the start of the war in Iraq, etc. Unfortunately, this app fails in delivering what people buy those papers for - a glimpse into the commentary surrounding the event. I would love this application if I could read some of the front page print accompanying the pictures, but the resolution is too low. Zooming end only results in blurrs where the text should be. If Poynter could update this app with a high res version, I would be happy to update this review.
